Strong winds and rains caused widespread damage throughout Carroll County, said Gayle Beard, Carroll County Emergency Management director.

Beard said a storm than crossed through Carroll County between 7:30 p.m. and 8 a.m. downed trees, power lines, and even a cell tower with a potential of 70 mile per hour winds.

The J.Z. George softball team had its best offensive output of the season against Cleveland Central, but fell just short, 23-15.

Olivia Carpenter led a 13-hit attack for J.Z. George with four hits. Tyeshia Grant, Makala Vest and Kelcia Stancil also had multiple hits. Four players stole at least four bases, led by Carpenter with eight.

According to Carroll County Sheriff Clint Walker, Charles Edward Kirksey of Indianola was arrested and charged with two counts of possession of controlled substances (methamphetamine and marijuana).

A Vaiden man is facing charges for molesting a young girl.

Justin Cooper, 30, of Vaiden has been arrested and charged with molesting a child for lustful purposes in connection with incidents that occurred in Winona between December 15 and 18.

Tree crushes cars in Carrollton

A large oak tree crashed to the ground Monday afternoon, totaling at least two vehicles in its wake.

According to Reba Bailey, owner of Tanglewood in Carrollton (at the corner of Washington and College Streets), around 3:30 p.m. Monday, she and her husband, Steve, heard a commotion outside the house.

The J.Z. George softball team fell to 0-2 with an 18-0 loss to Charleston. Jessica Liddell, Olivia Carpenter, Tyeshia Grant and Destiny Clardy had hits for J.Z. George.

“Our pitching improved this game, but we struggled to hit the ball,” said coach Jamie Tucker.

Another problem was that Charleston had 23 stolen bases.

The J.Z. George baseball team fell to 0-4 with losses to Ethel 14-1 and Yazoo County 16-4.

The Jaguars were hitless against Ethel. In the Yazoo County game “We didn't play terrible. We just didn't play great,” said Coach Wylie Rhodes.

Robert Pridgen, Josh Wiggins and Josh Johnson had hits against Yazoo County.
