Ink, trust and the people who make it possible
There’s an old truth in the newspaper business that doesn’t get said often enough, mostly because we’re too busy chasing the next story, the next deadline, the next thing somebody would rather you didn’t read.
So let’s say it plainly.
This newspaper exists because of you.
Not because of fancy presses or glowing screens. Not because of editors who think they know something.It exists because of the city’s, county’s, businesses and citizens support.

Taylor, Hunt to lead AES, CCHS in the upcoming year

Ackerman Elementary and Choctaw County High School will have two new principals for the upcoming year.
In Choctaw County School Board March meeting, the board approved the promotion of Lexi Taylor and the hiring of Amir Hunt.
Taylor currently serves as the assistant principal of Ackerman Elementary School.Taylor will succeed Principal Samantha Kelly, who is the incoming assistant superintendent.

Choctaw one of four counties approved for federal public assistance

Governor Tate Reeves released today that Choctaw, Itawamba, Oktibbeha, and Wilkinson were approved.

Town of Ackerman implements new ordinance for meeting rules

In an effort to shorten meetings and bring a sense of order to them, the Town of Ackerman has approved new rules for board meetings.
Now, there will be a citizens' comments section added to the board’s agenda. Similar to the public comments section, the Board of Supervisors and the Choctaw County School Board currently have.

Employee recommendations approved for CCSD 2026-2027 school year

During the March board meeting, the Choctaw County School District approved employee recommendations for the 2026-2027 school year.
“I want to be clear that Mr. [Glen] Blaine is still the assistant superintendent and Mr. [Glen] Beard is the superintendent, and he signed off on these,” Trustee Nola Bryant asked.
“Yes, I did,” Beard said. “My initials are on there.”

Lady Eagles stay perfect

Clay Grissom’s Eupora Lady Eagles continue to roll on this softball season.
After taking a two-game set against Choctaw County and Ethel earlier in the week, the Lady Eagles tested themselves against South Pontotoc on the road. Clinging to a 2-1 lead in the sixth inning, the Lady Eagles scored six runs in the last two frames on the way to a 8-3 win over the Lady Cougars.

A Lego building competition was part of Spring Break fun at the Webster County Public Library on March 11. Activities next week will include Senior Games at 10:30 a.m. March 24, Library Storytime at 10:30 a.m. March 25 and Head Start Storytime at 10 a.m. March 26.

McDaniel gives program for Maben Garden Club

Dr. Erica McDaniel, MSU Extension Service director for Webster County, gave the Maben Garden Club a most interesting slide presentation in February she had developed on “Preventing Dementia.”
Erica encouraged the ladies to maintain healthy lifestyle choices such as a heart-healthy diet, a good exercise plan, a healthy body weight, reduced stress and being a non-smoker.

Firefighters respond to house, wildland fires

Webster County firefighters responded to two house fires Saturday morning and multiple wildland fires over a recent five-day period.
The first house fire on March 14 was reported about 8:20 a.m. at McCain Estate with Eupora, Walthall and Mathiston volunteer fire departments dispatched. Pafford EMS and Natchez Trace Electric Power Association also responded.

Eupora tested by tough stretch, eyes rebound ahead of region play

It was a hot start to the 2026 baseball season for Eupora, but the Eagles have had their will tested over the last couple of weeks.
Coach Ben Aldridge wanted to test his team in the middle of the schedule before Class 2A, Region 4 play begins and test them he did. The Eagles have played up in competition the last two weeks with three teams in higher classifications and the results would be four losses.

Eupora Elementary Schools thanks its students, teachers and community members for saving soft drink tabs this school year. During spring break, Principal Lauren Smith delivered them to the Ronald McDonald House in Memphis, Tenn. This is an ongoing philanthropic collaborative project with EES and the Eupora Juniorette Club

SouthWay executive director named to MHS Board

New board members were announced, including Executive Director Patricia Rangel of The SouthWay Foundation, which is based in Eupora. She and other new members will join the board in June.
