The Town of Duck Hill is steps closer to renaming a portion of Highway 51 within the town’s limits in honor of gospel singer Lucie Campbell.
During their Monday night meeting, the board approved to re-adopt a resolution naming the portion of Highway 51 in Duck Hill as Lucie Campbell Memorial Highway. Al White told the board the highway had been approved by the legislature and was headed to Governor Phil Bryant’s desk to be signed but they needed the resolution from the town to move forward.
Mayor Joey Cooley said the resolution the board passed in March of 2017 wasn’t specific as to what part of Highway 51 was designated.
“This will only be within the city limits -- it won’t be the whole stretch of Highway 51,” Cooley said.
Also, the board heard from a resident who said she’s dealt with the runoff of sewage onto her property for two years. Public Works Superintendent Patricia Currington said she’d spoken with someone from the Mississippi Department of Health about the issue and they requested that another clause be added to the water user agreement.
Once approved by the board, the agreement would go into effect for all residents whether a new customer or an existing customer.
“We’ve been dealing with this incident with two separate houses. We sent a certified letter before, but the person never signed for it,” Currington said. She asked board attorney Ray Baum what is the next step to take.
“I think we can cut it (the water) off,” he said. “And the person will have to come in and set up a meeting with me and Joey and address the situation.”
He said Currington will have to give notice but because it’s a health issue, the town could act.
The board then unanimously voted to approve the new addition to the water user agreement.

*Tabled a decision to purchase an ad from the Winona Times for the 2019 Profile edition
*Heard from two residents who believed the town of Duck Hill is responsible to fix water lines they believe is on the city. Both had work done because of roots in their water lines. Currington said she checked both lines and saw they were near the town’s lines but they were not on the town.
