The Voter’s League held their monthly meeting Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at Haven United Methodist Church in Winona. The group is comprised of concerned citizens of Montgomery County who are concerned about the mental, emotional, economical and spiritual aspects of the county and come together to brainstorm on how they can make the county a better place.
The speakers for this meeting were Al White and Orman Knox. Originally, the speaker was supposed to have been Charles Taylor of One Voice in Jackson, but Taylor couldn’t make it and had to reschedule due to his child getting the flu.
White talked about the upcoming events that will commemorate Black History on Saturday, Feb. 16 beginning at 10 a.m. with documentaries about the Civil Rights era to be shown. Then, there will be a speaker at 2 p.m. at Zion District Baptist Church that will speak about the upcoming 2020 U.S. Census.
During the events, Dr. Doris J. Ward will speak during a luncheon and Kyra D. Roby with the U.S. Census will speak at 2 p.m. White told members of the Voter’s League that because Roby is employed with the federal government, she’s limited to what she can discuss but the event will be informative.
Knox spoke about the role of an election commissioner and how important representation is during the primary and general election. With qualifying for the 2019 countywide election underway, he told those in attendance before after qualifying is over, before they decide to give someone their vote they should vet them to see where they stand on the issues that are important to them.
“Vet them, vet them and vet them again,” Knox said. He said people should know who they are voting for and not just vote for someone based off of popularity. The group meets every second Tuesday at Haven United Methodist Church..
