The Winona High School Track teams are the new District 3-3A Champs, and the sweetest thing is that they won it at home.
Winona was the latest host site for the Division 5-1A and Division 3-3A meet on Saturday, April 10. Coach Chris McRae said the top four winners will move on to compete this Saturday. If they win their races Saturday, they will move on to the North State track meet. If they’re successful there, those racers will move on to the State Championship at Pearl High School on Friday, April 30.
In the boys 100 meter dash, T.J. Forrest took first with a time of 12:05. Forrest also took in the 200 and 400 meter dashes with times of 23:17 in the 200 and 52:81 in the 400.
Winona swept the Boys 800 meter dash with Robert Cross finishing first with a time 2:25, Ahmaud Seawood finished with a time of 2:46 and Thomas Rosamond finished with a time of 2:51. In the Boys 1600, Winona also swept the heat with Noah Durham finishing with a time of 5:25, Sam Matriasciano finishing with a time of 5:33 and Aidan Windham finishing closely behind Matriasciano with a time of 5:53.
In the boys 3200, Winona was the only school who competed in the heat. Aidan Windham finished with a time of 13:05, Thomas Rosamond finished with a time of 13:08 and Nathan Henson finished with a time of 14:25.
In the hurdles, Troylando Eden took the 110 and 300 meter hurdles with times of 17:98 in the 110 and 47:51 in the 300. TyMetrius Young finished third with a time of 19:53 and Taylor Williams finished fourth with a time of 19:66.
In the 300 hurdles, Taylor Williams finished second with a time of 48:51 and Tristin Purnell finished fourth with a time of 54:39.
Winona will face Humphreys County, Ruleville and Amanda Elzy Saturday in the Boys 4x1 meter relay. Winona finished second with a time of 48:51. Winona relay teams took first in the 4x2 and the 4x4. They were the only school to compete in the 4x8 and will move on to the next round Saturday.
In the field competition, TyMetrius Young and Kendarius Topps finished second and third in the boys high jump. Robert McMath finished first in the long jump. Dadarion Small finished second and Tristin Purnell finished third.
Taylor Williams finished first in the triple jump and Khristian Williams finished second. Winona also swept their heat in the pole vault. Issac Leech finished first in the pole vault with a 12’06 clearing. Jordan Leech finished second and Noah Durham finished third.
In the discus, Izavion Guess finished first with a throw of 109’05, Tyler Ables finished second with a throw of 96’05 and Braylon Holmes finished fourth with a throw of 75’06.
Devonte Bays finished first in the shot put, Izavion Guess finished second and Tyler Ables finished third.
In the girl’s division, Tamari Form finished third in the 100 meter dash with a time of 14:31. Jasmine McMath finished first in the 200 with a time of 30:02. In the 400 meter dash, Mikhalah Coker finished first with a time of 1:14:23 and Breanna Brownlee finished fourth with a time of 1:19:07.
Amya Phillips finished third in the 800 meter dash with a time of 3:50. Anna Beth Walton finished first in the girls 1600 with a time of 7:55 and Bella Durham finished fourth with a time of 8:33. In the 3200, Winona was the only school to compete. Anna Beth Walton finished first with a time of 18:54 and Bella Durham finished second with a time of 19:56.
In the hurdles, Brycelyn Townsend finished second in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 19:62. Winona was the only school to compete in the 300 meter hurdles. Townsend finished first in the 300 with a time of 54:29 and Tanyha Knight finished second with a time of 1:03:50.
Winona finished first in the 4x1 and 4x2 meter relays and were the only school to compete in the 4x4 and the 4x8 meter relays.
In the field events, Alexis Phillips finished first in the high jump. Mikhiyah Crawford and Cenya Forrest finish first and second in the long jump, Tamari Ford finished second in the triple jump.
Winona was the only school to compete in the pole vault with Eden Leech taking first and Bella Durham second. Amia Weathersby finished first in the discus with Emmy Lou McRae and Tamira Hamilton close behind her.
Kajalah Burt and Jada Leverette finished first and second in the shot put.
McRae said he knows Saturday that his team is going to have to bring some heat as they face foes Noxubee County and Choctaw County.
“I heard that Noxubee County’s got some talent. They got some fast kids and Choctaw County is pretty good,” he said. McRae said there were events they participated in where they were the only school. He said it’s because participation is down overall due to COVID.
“We’re a Delta district. A lot of those kids haven’t been in person. They didn’t even play football. And it doesn’t help that we were out a year. It’s hard to retrain a kid after two years,” he said.
But, even with those obstacles, Winona Track still were able to accumulate points to become district champs.
