The Carroll County Board of Supervisors held a recessed meeting on Monday, Nov. 9 at the Carrollton Courthouse at 1:30 p.m.
Supervisor Jim Neill said a solar panel sign that alerted travelers when they were speeding in Carrollton was knocked down by a high-speed chase.
“Someone came through here in a stolen car from Holmes County and knocked my sign down,” Neill said. “So, now I have to get another one.”
He told the supervisors if they wanted to get one, he’d order them one as well.
Supervisor Claude Fluker told Neill that his sign should be covered by the insurance. Neill said he was originally told it was the sign in McCarley that was down. Chancery Clerk Casey Carpenter said when he went through town Saturday night, he saw the sign was down.
“Well, I talked to [Sheriff] Clint [Walker] and they got him,” Neill said. “I also learned that destroying government property over $1,000 is a felony.”
He said he plans to pursue charges.
Supervisor Rickie Corley said when he came down Highway 35 this weekend, there were several four wheeler riding on the road.
Many of the Supervisors said they all have a problem with ATVs and four wheelers. They said it’s not the riding that’s the problem, it’s when riders cut donuts and tear up their roads that cause a problem.
Corley said the riders have been warned by the sheriff’s department but the riders are persistent.
The board also:
• Heard from Ben Shute and Mandy Carroll. Shute said Tax Assessor Wilton Neal and his deputy clerks refuse to sell Carroll a tag. Shute and Carrol said they work out-of-town but they still live, pay taxes, and vote in Carroll County.
Neal said it is the belief of his office that the two live in Rankin County because Shute has an RV that is in Rankin County while he works. Shute also had to fight for a tag for himself as well and said he plans to take the matter to the Attorney General’s office. Neal said he won’t issue a tag until the Department of Revenue tells him he should.
Hired Regenia Donley to replace Dorothy Prewitt at the Sanitation Office beginning January 1. Donley was recommended by Supervisors Claude Fluker and Dill Tucker.
Hired Judge Tinesha Erve-Earnest to cover Circuit Clerk Durward Stanton’s office part-time for two weeks. Chancery Clerk Casey Carpenter said he’s spoken with the State Auditor’s office and Erve-Earnest is allowed to cover the office for this short period of time.
Approved Marvin Allan, Shawanda Ward and Naomi Meeks to begin payment plans to settle outstanding garbage bills.
