County sends Atmos bill to make road repairs

After Atmos Energy dug up holes on McCarley Road to tie in existing gas lines, the company patched the road, but the patches have settled leaving a rough road. Supervisor Jim Neill said he feels Atmos should pay for repaving the road, and county officials agreed, sending Atmos a $68,000 bill.

Man facing charges in shooting

A Poplar Creek man will face the action of a grand jury for allegedly shooting at a Montgomery County Sheriff’s deputy.

Kelvin Robertson, 48, was arrested and charged with felony aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.

Winona Christian football coach Junior Graham made a few changes on offense last week, and they paid big dividends on Friday night.

Sophomore Dalton Wiggins had a monster night as he rushed for 133 yards and scored three touchdowns as the Stars beat Ethel 39-14 for their first win of the season.

The Winona slow-pitch softball team stretched its winning streak to five games with victories over Cleveland Central 7-2, Vicksburg 11-2 and Riverside 11-1. In those five games, the Lady Tigers scored 52 runs on 65 hits.

It took the Carroll Academy Rebels a little while to get going on Friday night at Benton Academy. But once they did, there was little Benton could do to stop them.

The Rebels took a 12-0 lead into the half and then scored 26 second-half points to hammer Benton Academy 38-0 on Friday night in the season opener for both teams.

John Hurt Festival set for Sept. 1-2

Eighteen years ago, Mary Frances Hurt-Wright began a festival in the tiny community of Avalon to celebrate the memory of her grandfather and blues legend, Mississippi John Hurt. That festival has now become an international draw, with people from Australia and even Japan coming to Avalon to attend in the John Hurt festival.
