Beginning in January, the State of Mississippi will began rolling out its new tag. The new tags have a golden background with the emblem “In God We Trust” in the center, and Carroll County residents will see an increase if the new tag is mailed to you.
Tax Assessor Wilton Neal said the new tags have four numbers so they can be extended longer. “Someone asked me why the new tags have four numbers, and it’s so they can last a little longer,” he said.
Neal said the new tags will begin with 0000 and will go higher as the numbers increase. He said those with an old-style tag with four numbers wouldn’t have to send their tags in right away but would eventually have to switch over to the new tags.
He told the board that the price of sending a tag has increased and to cover the cost, his office is increasing the amount from $2 to $3.60.
“If they (residents) come in and get their tag, then we take the $3.60 off, but if we have to send it to your house, then it’s a $3.60 charge,” he said.
He added that it’s expensive to send the tags off, and it’s a way to recoup the expense.
“What if postage increases?” Supervisor Claude Fluker asked. “That would make it $4.”
“Then, we’ll raise it a little more,” he said, adding he wasn’t sure if it would go up.
“You’re not bringing it before the board for a vote are you?” Board President Ricky Corley asked. “You’re just letting us know that this is happening.”
“Yes, so that way if someone asks you about it, you’ll already know what’s happening,” he said.
“So, it doesn’t matter if postage goes up? You’re just telling us.” Corley said.
“Yes,” Neal said.
