Carroll County could see a new marker honoring famed author Elizabeth Spencer.
Carrollton Mayor Pam Lee told the Carroll County Board of Supervisors that Save Mississippi has plans to possibly honor Spencer with a trail marker.
“I don’t know the cost yet,” Lee told the supervisors “But, I wanted to see if the board would be interested in partnering with the town to see about getting a marker.”
Lee said she doesn’t know where the marker will be placed right now.
“I hope it’s at the (Merrill) Museum which is where we have a collection of her books,” she said.
According to her bio on Mississippi Writers and Musicians, Spencer was born in Carrollton and has written several books and short stories over the years. She currently lives in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
Notably, Spencer is known for Starting Over, The Southern Woman, The Light at the Piazza, Knights and Dragons, Fire in the Morning, On the Gulf and Jack of Diamonds and among others.
Supervisor Claude Fluker told Lee to keep the board informed on more information about Spencer’s marker.
“Let us know when you find out more about it,” Fluker told Lee.
