The awards keep coming in for the 2025 Winona Christan School Stars. Ten members of the team who were instrumental in helping WCS to an 8-3 mark and the district title and a Class AA – Division 1 semifinal berth were named to the Class AA, All-District 2 squad recently.

Singers across the Pine Belt and beyond are invited to audition for a landmark choral event - a special concert performance of the Life, Death, and Resurrection portions of Handel’s “Messiah.” While audiences often hear only the well-known Christmas section during the holiday season, this production will bring to life the dramatic and profoundly moving sections that follow; music that reveals the anguish of sacrifice, the triumph of resurrection, and the transformative message of redemption. Southern Pines Animal Shelter is thrilled to announce that in 2025 they were awarded an $18,329.57 Mightycat Innovation Grant from the Orphan Kitten Club. This grant has been lifesaving for the shelter’s most vulnerable residents over the course of the 2025 kitten season, supporting the creation of the Bitty Beans Nursery, a newly outfitted, more efficient foster space dedicated to neonatal kittens (0-8 weeks old).

15 Mississippi Sites Placed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2025
The 2025 Mississippi listings in the National Register of Historic Places include Provine Chapel at Mississippi College, the home of a lauded quiltmaker in Jefferson County and five historic districts across the state. In all, 15 properties were listed in the National Register this year.

MSDH Releases Top Baby Names of 2025
Jackson, Miss- James and Amelia were the most popular names in the state for baby boys and girls born in 2025, respectively, according to the Mississippi State Department of Health’s Office of Vital Records and Public Health Statistics.
The Office of Vital Records compiles a list of most popular baby names born to Mississippi residents every year. The counts and rankings are based on provisional birth certificate data.

Garden follies

This is the week where I usually do my annual Felder Fesses Up, in which I chronicle my previous year’s garden follies and foibles. But it wasn’t so bad after all.
Mostly, in my attempt to reduce garden chores to accommodate my aging old bones, I dug up scattered flower beds and planters, leaving just a handful I can easily manage and still get a good “color echo” vibe. I rogued out a bunch of nandina, pulled piles of Virginia creeper and Asiatic jasmine, and spread a lot of mulch.
