Officials tasked with selecting and naming the next Jackson State University president plan to choose three top candidates next week, March 19-20, and invite them to the campus for a second round of interviews in mid-April.
On Thursday, members of the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning’s Board of Trustees, the Jackson State search advisory constituency and search firm consultants went into closed session to discuss semifinalists for first-round interviews. March 3 was the deadline to apply for the university’s top role.

Mississippi counties included in the tornado watch include Alcorn, Attala, Benton, Bolivar, Calhoun, Carroll, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Clay, Coahoma, Desoto, Grenada, Holmes, Humphreys, Issaquena, Itawamba, Lafayette, Lee, Leflore, Marshall, Monroe, Montgomery, Oktibbeha, Panola, Pontotoc, Prentiss, Quitman, Sharkey, Sunflower, Tallahatchie, Tate, Tippah, Tishomingo, Tunica, Union, Washington, Webster, Yalobusha and Yazoo.
The National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center has issued a tornado watch for portions of Eastern Arkansas and Northern and Central Mississippi until 11 p.m. Sunday, March 15.
Several tornadoes are likely with a couple intense tornadoes possible. Widespread damaging winds and isolated significant gusts to 80 mph are also likely while scattered large hail and isolated very large hail events up to 2 inches in diameter are possible.

Corey Wiggins, a Hazlehurst native and federal co-chair of the Delta Regional Authority, will be the next president of Tougaloo College effective July 1.
He will be the 15th president in the school’s 157-year-history, succeeding Donzell Lee.
Tougaloo’s Board of Trustees appointed Wiggins as president Friday after a yearlong national search.

The company said Thursday that the collective bargaining agreement for union-represented shipbuilders provides historic wage growth of 35% to 47% through 2031.
All five union organizations at Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula have now ratified new collective bargaining agreements with HII, following voting by their members. The new contract will run through March 8, 2031.
Employing more than 11,000 employees, Ingalls Shipbuilding is the largest manufacturing employer in Mississippi.

Carroll Academy picked up wins on Monday and Tuesday on the baseball diamond but lost its last game of the week at Kirk Academy.
The Rebels defeated Delta Academy 17-4 last Monday, outhitting the Raiders 9-2 and taking advantage of three defensive errors and 11 walks issued by Delta pitching.
Hayes White (1-1) got the win on the mound, yielding all four runs on two hits, walking four and fanning three.
He had an RBI and scored two runs on offense.

The J.Z. George girls fast-pitch softball team extended its winning streak to five with a sweep of its three opponents last week.
The Lady Jags began the week with a 17-2 victory at Leake Central Monday. J.Z. George scored nine runs in the first, one in the second, five in the third and two in the fourth. Leake scored one run each in the second and third innings.
Saralyn Roberts got the win in the circle, allowing both runs on one hit, striking out eight. She had a single and double, driving in two runs.

The Winona High School girls fast-pitch softball team slid to 7-3 on the season with a pair of losses last week.
The Lady Tigers lost to Choctaw County 26-9 on Tuesday. No other details were available.
Winona played at French Camp Academy Friday, falling 8-6. The Lady Tigers made four errors on defense and were outhit 8-5.
Lindsey Berryhill (6-3) took the loss in the circle, as she went six innings, allowing eight runs (four earned) on eight hits, walking two and fanning three.

The J.Z. George baseball team started its spring break with a 15-0 loss to Calhoun Academy in the Kirk Academy Tournament in Grenada Monday.
Calhoun plated six runs each in the first and third frames and three in the second. Calhoun outhit J.Z. George 7-1, and the Jags made eight defensive errors.
Hayden Brown had a single for the lone hit. Kaleb Mulvihill (1-1) took the loss, as he went all three innings, walking five and fanning two.
The Jaguars played Winona Christian School and Delta Academy Wednesday at the tournament.

The Winona High School baseball team continued to struggle, as the Tigers lost two games last week on the diamond.
The Tigers started the week with a 13-0 loss to Choctaw County Monday. Choctaw outhit Winona 8-4 and took advantage of four errors and eight walks issued by Tiger pitching.
Alejandro White (0-2) suffered the loss, going two innings, giving up seven runs on three hits, walking six and fanning three. Jayvien Flowers went one inning, allowing six runs on five hits, walking two. Tommarion Brown went one inning, fanning one.
