On April 10, 1925, the little-known writer F. Scott Fitzgerald quietly published a novel that went largely ignored. Despite letters of praise from esteemed writers like T.S. Eliot, Willa Cather, and Edith Wharton, "The Great Gatsby" was largely misunderstood and by the conclusion of the year had only sold around 20,000 copies. Even the stage adaptation and silent film, could not save the work from leaving the Twenties under the aegis of a "Jazz Age commercial failure."

POPLARVILLE, Miss. — The No. 3 Pearl River baseball team continued its scorching start to MACCC play Saturday afternoon, blasting seven home runs and piling up 26 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Northeast, 17-1 and 9-6.
Through four conference games, the Wildcats have scored 56 runs.

BOONEVILLE, Miss. — After a week without playing, it would have been easy for No. 1 Pearl River softball to show some rust in its MACCC opener — but the Wildcats did just the opposite.
Pearl River went on the road Saturday and swept No. 19 Northeast, taking game one 6-3 before finishing off the Tigers with an 11-5 win in the nightcap.

On Wednesday, the last day for action on bills originating from the other chamber, House Bill 1739 did not come up for a vote.

William Carey baseball dropped its weekend series to Faulkner University on Saturday evening at Milton Wheeler Field, falling 10–3 in game one before coming up just short in an 8–7 loss in the nightcap.
Faulkner broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third inning of game one. Anthory Bassett Torres singled and moved into scoring position on a pair of wild pitches before scoring on an RBI single by CJ Robertson to give the Eagles a 1–0 lead.

A Hinds County Chancery judge on Wednesday ordered the Mississippi Division of Medicaid to temporarily stop collecting money owed by Greenwood Leflore Hospital after the hospital said resuming the recoupments would likely force the Delta hospital to close.

Officials tasked with selecting and naming the next Jackson State University president plan to choose three top candidates next week, March 19-20, and invite them to the campus for a second round of interviews in mid-April.
On Thursday, members of the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning’s Board of Trustees, the Jackson State search advisory constituency and search firm consultants went into closed session to discuss semifinalists for first-round interviews. March 3 was the deadline to apply for the university’s top role.

Corey Wiggins, a Hazlehurst native and federal co-chair of the Delta Regional Authority, will be the next president of Tougaloo College effective July 1.
He will be the 15th president in the school’s 157-year-history, succeeding Donzell Lee.
Tougaloo’s Board of Trustees appointed Wiggins as president Friday after a yearlong national search.

The company said Thursday that the collective bargaining agreement for union-represented shipbuilders provides historic wage growth of 35% to 47% through 2031.
All five union organizations at Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula have now ratified new collective bargaining agreements with HII, following voting by their members. The new contract will run through March 8, 2031.
Employing more than 11,000 employees, Ingalls Shipbuilding is the largest manufacturing employer in Mississippi.
