The Winona High School girls’ basketball team picked up a 49-36 Region 3-3A win over Ruleville last Friday night in Ruleville.
The Lady Tigers (9-11 overall, 2-4 in district) led 19-12 after the first period, 40-14 at the half and 49-19 after the third frame.
Jayla Campbell led Winona with 16 points. Markashia Burnett tacked on 12 points, and Azaria Small had eight points. Amber Stewart finished with six.
In the boys’ game, Ruleville posted a 72-49 victory to drop the Tigers to 6-14 overall and 1-5 in district. Ruleville led 21-12 after the first period, 39-26 at the half and 57-35 after the third frame.
Denarius Robinson led Winona with 13 points and four assists. Fred Clark tacked on eight points and six boards, and Tristin Purnell had six points, three rebounds and three assists.
Tyler Lockhart had six points, four rebounds and two steals, and Chance Richardson had six points and two boards.
In games from last Tuesday, the Lady Tigers defeated Water Valley 64-22 as they led 15-5 after the first, 28-10 at the half and 54-21 after the third period.
Campbell led Winona with 23 points, and Amber Stewart chipped in 19. Small and Ariella Jones had seven each.
In the boys’ contest, Water Valley nipped the Tigers 39-38 in overtime. Winona led 15-14 at the half and 26-19 after the third, but the Blue Devils held a 15-8 scoring advantage in the fourth frame to force the extra period.
Clark led the Tigers with 12 points and eight rebounds, and Robinson had 10 points and four assists. Keshawn Brown had six points and six rebounds, and Chase Richardson had five points, six boards and three assists.
Winona, which played host to Amanda Elzy Tuesday, entertains Ruleville on Friday. The Region 3-3A Tournament will be played at Greenwood High School next week.

Visiting East Webster pulled off a sweep of J.Z. George last Tuesday night in Region 4-2A action in North Carrollton.
In the boys’ game, East Webster won 76-46 as it led 18-10 after the first, 42-22 at the half and 60-35 after the third frame.
Deshawn Hemmingway led the Jags (4-15 overall, 1-3 in region) with 16 points. BJ Green tacked on eight, and Rodney Catron had seven. Jeremiah Williams had five points.
In the girls’ game, East Webster claimed a 79-39 win as it led 24-12 after one and 49-22 at the half.
Aaniyah Williams led the Lady Jaguars with 26 points. Kamiya Williams had six points, and Sharissa Gladness tallied five.
The Lady Jaguars played host to Choctaw County last Friday as they dropped a 62-34 decision. The Lady Chargers led 12-7 after one, 26-18 at the half and 42-25 after the third period.
Aaniyah Williams led J.Z. George (3-20, 1-4) with 25 points.
The Jaguars and Chargers played their contest Tuesday at Choctaw County.
The Region 4-2A tournament will be played next week at Calhoun City.
