A Lexington man is facing federal charges after his July 13 arrest at the Carroll County Courthouse in Carrollton.
Tamarius Webster, 36, is facing federal weapons charges and was served with a federal indictment at the time of his arrest, according to a statement released by Sheriff Clint Walker.
Webster also is charged in Lafayette County, Miss. and Madison County, Tenn. with possession of a weapon by a felon.
“Webster was out on bond on charges of residential burglary and grand larceny,” the release stated.
United States Marshals, Carroll County Sheriff’s deputies and Alcohol Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agents arrested Webster at the Courthouse without incident, according to Walker.
He had been charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and kidnapping in connection with a 2022 incident.
“Those charges were dropped, however, due to the victim being uncooperative with the investigation,” stated the release. “At the time of Webster’s arrest [on July 13], he was found to be in possession of the same off-duty Winona police officer’s service weapon.”
In 2022, Webster was charged with two counts of kidnapping and disturbance of a family on Sept. 1, according to reports. He was accused of holding hostage his ex-girlfriend – a law enforcement officer and their eight-month-old child, at the time.
Walker said the kidnapping happened on Aug. 30 at the officer’s home, and the victim reported Webster was shooting at her home with an automatic rifle. She had received death threats towards her and her family, according to reports.
The sheriff said Webster told the victim he was in the woods near her home, and when she looked out, he fired a shot striking the ground. Her five-year-old son was outside when the shot was fired. The child was not hit.
Walker said Carroll County deputies quickly assembled a multi-agency team to secure the scene. The team consisted of deputies, officers and troopers with CCSD along with the Winona Police Department; Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department; Mississippi Bureau of Investigations; Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks; Mississippi Highway Patrol SWAT; Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics SWAT; Madison County SWAT; Oxford SWAT and the U.S. Marshal Service.
“Webster showed himself to be a dangerous man last year during the kidnapping/aggravated assault incident,” said Walker. “While jailed at [the Carroll Montgomery Regional Correctional Facility], he even admitted to a local newspaper that his intentions that day had been ‘death by cop.’ Such a person is unstable and shouldn’t be rubbing elbows with the general public. We were more than happy to assist the U.S. Marshals and ATF in his apprehension. I thank the Lord that no one was hurt.”
