Both Winona Christian basketball teams qualified for the North 4A state tournament last week at Winston.
The Lady Stars opened the District 3-4A Tournament with a 46-21 win over Canton. But the Lady Stars then dropped a 50-16 decision to Winston and a 62-43 game to rival Winston to finish fourth in the tournament.
The WCS boys opened with a 47-42 loss to Oak Hill and then beat Winston 57-43 in the consolation game to finish third.
The Winona Christian girls finished as the No. 4 seed out of district play and were scheduled to take on Greenville St. Joseph in first-round action on Monday. The winner will get No. 1 seed Kirk Academy on Wednesday in a 6:30 p.m. contest.
The WCS boys were the No. 3 seed coming out of district play and were scheduled to take on Indianola in first-round action. The winner will take on Greenville Christian on Wednesday at 5:15 p.m.
Winona Christian girls 46, Canton 21
The Lady Stars used a big second half to take a 25-point win over the Lady Panthers in the first round of the District 3-4A tournament.
Canton led 12-9 at the end of the first and 18-13 at the half. But Winona outscored Canton 15-0 in the second to take a 28-18 lead into the third. Winona continued to add to its lead, outscoring Canton 18-3 in the fourth for the final margin.
Allie Leach led Winona Christian with 18 points while Lucy Oliver had nine points. Kaylah Brooke Varnes had seven points while Terri Cain added four points. Lennie Kate Wood and Sara Beth Rawles also chipped in three points apiece.
Winston girls 50, Winona Christian 16
The Lady Patriots overcame a slow start and took a 34-point win over the Lady Stars in the tournament semifinals.
Winston held a slim 10-9 lead at the end of the first before outscoring Winona 22-3 in the second to lead 32-12 at the half. Winston continued to add to its lead, outscoring Winona 13-1 in the third and 5-3 in the fourth to take the win.
Sara Beth Rawles and Allie Leach each had four points apiece while Malaina Kuhn had three points.
Carroll girls 62, Winona Christian 43
The Lady Rebels used a big second half to pull away and take a 19-point win over the Lady Stars.
Winona led most of the first half as they outscored Carroll 15-5 in the first. Carroll outscored Winona 23-14 to cut the lead to 29-28 at the half. Winona then outscored Carroll 15-6 in third and 19-8 in the fourth.
Lucy Oliver led Winona Christian with 14 points while Sara Beth Rawles and Allie Leach each had eight points. Kaylah Brooke Varnes chipped in four points while Lennie Kate Wood had three points.
Winona Christian boys 57, Winston 43
The Stars opted up a big first-half lead and took a 14-point win over the Patriots.
Winona Christian doubled up Winston in the first, outscoring the Patriots 22-11. The Stars took the second period 17-7 and led 38-18 at the half. Winston outscored Winona 13-12 in the third and 13-6 in the fourth for the final margin.
Reese Johnson led Winona with 21 points while Brannon Hill had 13 points. Jack Sorgen had seven points while Reese Cooper and Will Irwin each had six points.
Oak Hill boys 47, Winona Christian 42
The Raiders took an early lead and held on to take a five-point win over the Raiders.
Oak Hill led 20-14 at the end of the first period and outscored Winona 11-9 in the second to lead 31-22 at the half. Winona then outscored Oak Hill 11-5 in the third to cut the lead to 36-33 going to the fourth. Oak Hill held on and outscored WCS 11-9 in the fourth for the final margin.
Reese Cooper led WCS with 11 points while Reese Johnson had 10 points. Jack Sorgen had eight points while Braxton Leach had seven points. Will Irwin also chipped in five points.
