Winona Christian baseball coach Shannon Self said the Stars let one get away last week as they split a district series with Marshall Academy.
The Stars lost a pair of extra-inning games last week as they fell 11-7 to the Jackson Victors on Monday. The Stars then beat Marshall 12-9 on Tuesday before falling to the Patriots 10-9 on Friday.
Winona Christian will return to action on Tuesday as they travel to Central Holmes in a key district matchup. The Stars will then host the Trojans on Friday to finish out the week.
Jackson Victors 11, Winona Christian 7
The Victors scored four runs in the eighth inning to take a four-run win over the Stars Monday.
Each team scored one run in the first inning and Winona scored one in the fourth to lead 2-1. Each team then scored five runs in the fifth inning before the Victors scored one run in the seventh to send the game to extra innings.
Winona had just six hits in the contest, led by Latham Hill who was 2-for-3 with two home runs, including a grand slam as he drove in four runs. Blake Marlow was 2-for-5 with two runs scored while Choyce Diffey singled and scored a run.
Cade Marlow got the start and pitched four innings, giving up four runs on four hits and four walks while striking out nine. Hayden Self pitched 1 2/3 innings and gave up two unearned runs on one hit and one walk while striking out three. Deuce Irwin pitched the final 2 1/3 innings and gave up five runs on five hits and a walk while striking out three.
Winona Christian 12, Marshall 9
The Stars built a big lead early and held on to take a three-run win on Tuesday in game one of the two-game series.
Winona scored three in the first and four in the second for a 7-0 lead. But Marshall scored three in the fourth and five in the fifth along with one in the sixth. The Stars scored single runs in the fourth and fifth and finished off the game with three in the sixth.
Winona had eight hits and took advantage of five errors and five walks.
Choyce Diffey was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three RBIs while Latham Hill had a home run, scored twice and drove in three runs. Corley Goss was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored. Colby Marlow tripled and scored a run and had an RBI. Dalton Wiggins and Deuce Irwin both singled and scored while Connor Nail scored twice.
Latham Hill got the start on the mound and pitched four innings, giving up three unearned runs on three hits and two walks while striking out eight. John White pitched an inning and gave up six runs, only one earned, on four hits and two walks. Blake Marlow finished out the game and picked up the win with two scoreless innings and four strikeouts.
Marshall 10, Winona Christian 9
The Patriots scored four runs in the last two innings to take a come-from-behind win over the Stars to split the season series Friday.
Winona scored three runs in the first and two in the fourth and led 5-2. Marshall then answered with four runs in the fifth to go ahead 7-4. But the Stars scored three in the sixth to lead take a 8-6 lead into the bottom of the seventh. Marshall scored two in the bottom of the seventh and two in the eighth to take the walk-off win.
Winona out-hit Marshall 13-11 on the day as Blake Marlow was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Latham Hill was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs while Reed Roberts was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Corley Goss was 2-for-5 while Colby Marlow doubled and drove in three runs. Choyce Diffey doubled and scored a run while Hayden Self also had a double.
Blake Marlow got the start and pitched 4 2/3 innings and gave up six runs on six hits and two walks while striking out two. Cade Marlow pitched 2 2/3 innings and gave up four runs on five hits and three walks while striking out three.
