Two motorists died in a head-on collision at the intersection of New Hope Road and Mississippi Highway 51 on Feb. 8.
Betty Thompson Ferguson, 84 of Winona, was traveling north on Highway 51 in a 2017 Buick Lacrosse. The second driver, who had not been identified by press time on Wednesday, was traveling south on Highway 51 in a 2021 Kia when the vehicles collided, according to Allan Pratt, Montgomery County Emergency Operating Center (EOC) director.
Pratt said the EOC received multiple reports of the collision -- one the cars was on fire, and both drivers were trapped in their vehicles at 11:27 that morning.
Winona Fire Chief Brad Mooneyham said the vehicle that caught fire had a Shelby County, Tennessee license plate.
“The one from Tennessee was deceased before the car caught on fire,” said Mooneyham. “A paramedic checked both of them. MedStat was on the scene.”
Pratt, who also serves as Montgomery County Coroner, pronounced both drivers dead at the scene.
He said Winona Police Department, Winona Fire Department, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department, MedStat, Mississippi Highway Patrol and Winona Montgomery Consolidated School District Police Department responded to the report of the wreck.
