A house fire last Thursday in Stewart is believed to have been accidental, according to officials.
The house, which was being remodeled on Union Church Street, was declared a complete loss. Fortunately, there were no occupants in the dwelling at the time of the fire.
“There was no electricity to the house,” Montgomery County Sheriff Jeff Tompkins said. “It seems like a small burn pile got out of control and got to the house.”
The Kilmichael Volunteer Fire Department arrived on to the scene approximately 10 minutes after the initial 911 call was received by dispatch, according to David Eldridge, who serves on the Kilmichael VFD.
“The owners had not yet moved in,” he said.
Eldridge added that the Kilmichael VFD responded to the fire to assist the Stewart VFD. Two Webster County fire trucks also responded. Approximately 10 firefighters worked the scene.
Sheriff Tompkins does not believe any further investigation will be required related to the case.
“We’ve spoken to everyone involved,” he concluded.
Sheriff Tompkins and Eldridge both declared the house a total loss.
