Pickle ball courts, the appearance of Highway 51 and Winona High School football team’s recent Class 3A State Championship victory were the topics of conversation during the Winona Board of Aldermen’s meeting last Thursday.
Winona resident Jennifer Ramage, who spoke on the progress of obtaining funds for pickle ball courts for the city’s recreation park, was the first on the agenda. She updated the Board by saying she and Mark Narmour have applied for a grant to build the courts because the current tennis courts they are using are too large for regulation games.
After Ramage spoke, the Board heard from Bobby Wright on the status of the cleanup of the property across from Home Front Hardware on Highway 51. This issue was brought before the Board because people have complained of the appearance of the property. The Board discussed the appearance of the property, however, they were told by the city’s attorney Adam Kirk that a Code Enforcement Officer would need to come in to inspect the property for any code or ordinance violations.
“The Board is not the law enforcement arm of the city,” Kirk told the Board in regard to the city’s desire to step in and do something regarding the looks of the property.
There was also discussion about celebrating the Winona Tigers’ win in the 3A Football State Championship. Alderwoman Linda Purnell advocated for throwing a parade specifically for the Tigers’ football team. She criticized the placement of the football team’s float in the parade, stating that very few people were able to see the team during the parade.
“What they should’ve done is wait until Santa Claus came, and then put them behind him,” Purnell said.
In other business, the Board:
• Approved a request to honor longtime resident and volunteer Dorothy Herrod with a proclamation honoring her for the Dec. 7 meeting.
• Approved Police Chief Roshaun Daniels’ request to have Lt. B.J. Edwards attend a certified investigator class in January.
• Approved to purchase a congratulatory ad in The Winona Times for the Winona Tigers’ victory in the football state championship.
