The Winona boys 400 relay team of An’darius Coffey, Malcolm Gholston, Adavion Hargrove and Ahmad Robinson finished first at the Southaven Relays Monday with a time of 44.08. That was almost a full second better than runner-up Senatobia.
The same foursome finished third in the 800 relay in 1:34.46, trailing Senatobia (1:33.55) and Southaven (1:33.89).
Hargrove and Robinson ran on the 400 team that took Gold at last year's 2A state meet and was fourth in the 800. Gholston and Coffey ran on the 1600 relay team that was second in last year's state meet. All four were members of the Tiger football team that won Region 5-3A in the fall.
Competition was only in relays. The relays represented the first competition of the season for the Winona boys and girls track teams. Relays were scheduled for last Saturday, but delayed two days due to rain.
Other Winona teams were girls 400 in fifth, girls 800 sixth, boys 800 sprint medley relay seventh and girls 800 and 1600 sprint medley relay both eighth.
“We're on schedule as far as I thought we would be running at this point of the season,” said coach Chris McRae. “At this time of the year, you have a long way to go, but I feel good about where we're at.”
Frequent rain has been a problem for preseason practices. “It's been tough. We have been in the gym some,” McRae said.
Winona will host practice meets Tuesday and Thursday next week.
