The Winona softball team opened the season with a 4-0 win over Leake Central and a 10-0 loss to defending 4A state champion Kosciusko in Jamboree games.
The scheduled regular season opening games with Charleston and French Camp last Friday were rained out and rescheduled as doubleheaders.
“Defensively, we did fine,” said coach Steven Helms. “We struggled with the bat. We put the ball in play. We just didn't get base hits.”
MyCala Helms and Allyn Claire Gant combined on a four-inning two hitter against Leake Central, with five strikeouts and two walks. Helms had a single, double and two RBIs. Tommesha Brown, Jada Johnston and Marilois Ussery each had a hit and Emilee Lowery drove home a run. Helms had the team's only hit against Kosciusko.
The Charleston game will be made up as part of a doubleheader Thursday at Charleston. Winona will also play a twinbill at French Camp March 8.
The Lady Tigers had a doubleheader at Southeast Lauderdale Tuesday and will be at Raleigh Friday. The home opener is Monday against Forest.
Baseball
Rain prevented the Winona baseball team from playing any games last week. The Tigers have home games Friday against Choctaw County and Saturday against J.Z. George and Kirk Academy.
Tennis
The Winona tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to Eupora in the opening match of the season.
The team's points came in girls singles – Mackenzie Weeks – and No. 1 girls doubles – Madeline Branch and Emma Rickles. Both won in 10-point tiebreakers after splitting sets.
“There are some areas we have to work on, but overall I was pleased,” coach Lance VanHorn said. “We're learning as we go.”
