Sisters will lead the Winona track team when the Lady Tigers host the Region 2-2A meet April 12. Sophomore Tyra Weathersby and senior Natori Weathersby are both defending gold medalists from the 2017 MHSAA 2A state meet.
Tyra won the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 2 inches and the triple jump (38-4¼). Natori out-distanced the competition in the discus with a throw of 113-10. Tyra also took fourth in the 400 in 1:04.17 as the Lady Tigers finished third at the state meet with 69 points. Krystle Hughes, a junior, finished fourth in the 100 (12.70) and the 200 (26.45).
West Bolivar won with 86 points and North Forrest was runner-up with 74.
“On the positive side, we have some girls who I think can win their events at the state meet,” said Coach Chris McRae. “We have to have some other girls step up because we don't have a lot of numbers.”
Natori Weathersby won the discus at the first meet of the year with a toss of 111-1 at the Madison Central Track Classic while competing against athletes from some of the state's top 5A and 6A schools. Hughes finished fourth in the 100, fourth in the high jump, fifth in the long jump and sixth in the 200.
The boys team finished 15th at the 2017 state meet with 20½ points.
”The boys team is young this year, with a lot of sophomores and juniors,” McRae said. “We are progressing every week.”
The team is led by juniors Jalen Phillips and Ahmad Robinson.
