In the words of 1970s rock music icon Meatloaf — “two out of three ain’t bad.”
Both Winona Christian teams won two of out three games last week, sweeping games from Nanih Waiya and Hebron Christian but losing a pair to Tri-County Academy.
Winona was set to host Benton on Tuesday in their only game this week. They will then open district play next week as they host Carroll on Tuesday. They will end the pre-Christmas schedule with home games against Tri-County and Nanih Waiya.
WCS boys 42, Nanih Waiya 29
The Stars used a big third period to pull away and beat the Warriors last week.
Winona led 16-10 at the end of the first and 18-17 at the half. The Stars put the game away in the third period as they outscored Nanih Waiya 16-4 to take a 34-21 lead going into the fourth where each team scored eight points.
Reed Roberts led Winona with 16 point while Zack Bailey and Latham Hill had nine points apiece.
WCS girls 44, Nanih Waiya 20
The Lady Stars raced out to a big lead in the first half and cruised to the 24-point win.
Winona jumped out to a 16-5 lead in the first period and then outscored the Lady Warriors 22-3 in the second to lead 38-8 at the half.
Sara Burden White led Winona with 12 points while Elise Diffey added 10 points. Bella Roberts and Olivia Brooks each had seven points apiece.
In the junior varsity contest, Winona took a 42-14 win as Roberts scored 27 points.
WCS boys 46, Hebron 41
The Stars raced out to a double-digit lead but had to hold on to beat Hebron.
Winona jumped out to a 15-6 lead at the end of the first and led 27-14 at the half. Hebron started to cut into the Winona lead in the second half as they outscored the Stars 15-12 in the third and 12-7 in the fourth for the final.
Reed Roberts had another big night with 24 points while Latham Hill had 12 points.
WCS girls 46, Hebron 27
The Lady Stars overcame a first-half deficit and outscored the Lady Eagles 31-9 in the second half to cruise to the 19-point win.
Winona led 9-8 at the end of the first but trailed 18-15 at the half. The Lady Stars got going in the second half, outscoring Hebron 16-2 in the third and 15-7 in the fourth to take the win.
Elise Diffey led the Lady Stars with 17 points while Jada Mims had 12 points. Bella Roberts added eight and Sara Burden White added five.
In the junior varsity contest, Winona won 23-18 as Roberts scored 11 points.
Tri-County boys 52, WCS 37
The Rebels outscored the Stars in every period and took a 15-point win last week.
Tri-County led 16-13 at the end of the first and 24-20 at the half. The Rebels continued to extend their lead in the second half, outscoring the Stars 14-11 in the third and 14-6 in the fourth.
Reed Roberts led Winona with 13 points while Latham Hill had 10 and Zack Bailey added eight.
Tri-County girls 52, WCS 34
The Lady Stars took only their second loss of the season in an 18-point setback to Tri-County.
