OXFORD — Winona took to the gridiron at Oxford High School for a jamboree game with Senatobia last Saturday and came away with a 19-14 victory.
“Defensively, I thought we played well against the run,” said Coach Joey Tompkins. “I didn’t think we played well against the pass. Offensively, we did okay in the passing game, but I didn’t think we did well in the running game. We didn’t protect the ball well.
“But overall, we came out of it healthy. That was the best thing that happened.”
The offensive highlight was two long touchdown passes from An’darius Coffey to Ahmad Robinson. On defense, linebacker La’Christian Forrest played well off the bench. “He doesn’t start, but I thought he played very well while he was in there,” Tompkins said. “He was kind of a bright spot.”
The Tigers open their first season as a 3A team Friday at Strayhorn. Winona defeated the Mustangs 58-0 last year, but Tompkins is not worried that his players might be overconfident.
“They’ll be focused, ready to play. I’m not concerned about them overlooking anybody. We’re going to prepare like we normally do.”
The first home game is Aug. 24 against Choctaw County, which reached the third round of the 3A playoffs last year.
