The Winona slow-pitch softball team dropped two games in a tournament at Eupora last Saturday, losing to Eupora 11-0 and East Webster 7-6.
“We struggled on both sides of the ball,” coach Steven Helms said of the Eupora game. “We didn’t hit the ball and we didn’t play well on defense. We missed routine fly balls in the outfield. We just didn’t play well at all.”
Missed scoring opportunities and some defensive mistakes hurt the Lady Tigers against East Webster. “We did hit the ball better, but we didn’t hit consistently up and down the lineup,” Helms said. “The top part was hitting. The bottom part wasn’t. We had the bases loaded a couple of times. We had opportunities but couldn’t capitalize on them.”
Tommesha Brown, MyCala Helms, Sara Neely O’Bryant and Allyn-Claire Gant had two hits each against West Webster.
With a 1-3 record, Winona was set to play at Bruce Tuesday and has road games Thursday and Saturday at Starkville and Leake Central.
“We’re going to concentrate on hitting,” Helms said of practices. “If you can’t score runs in slow-pitch, you’re not going to win.”
