The Carroll Academy boys continued their postseason roll as they took two tight wins and one blowout victory to win the Class AAA North State Tournament last week at Central Holmes.
The Rebels opened with a hard-fought 54-49 win over Marshall Academy and then had to hold on to take a 51-50 win over Clarksdale Lee in the tournament semifinals. The Rebels then had a little bit easier task in the tournament finals on Saturday as they beat North Delta 59-41 to capture the tournament title.
The Lady Rebels’ season came to an end in the first round of the North AAA Tournament as they lost 33-29 to Kirk Academy.
The Carroll boys now advance to the Class AAA state tournament at Canton Academy and will take on South No. 4 Bowling Green on Tuesday at 7:45 p.m. If the Rebels win that game, they would advance to the semifinals and play the winner of Clinton Christian and Oak Hill on Friday at 6 p.m. The tournament championship game is set for Saturday at 7:15 p.m.
Carroll boys 59, North Delta 41
The Rebels overcame a slow start and pulled away to take an 18-point win over the Green Wave on Saturday in the championship game.
Carroll led just 9-6 at the end of the first but outscored North Delta 19-9 in the second to lead 28-15 at the half. Each team scored 14 points in the third period as Carroll led 42-29 at the end of the third. Carroll finished off North Delta by outscoring the Wave 17-12 in the fourth period to take the North Half title.
Austin Smith led Carroll with 20 points while Reese Fulton had another double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Logan Taylor also had 14 points for the Rebels in the win.
Carroll boys 51, Clarksdale Lee 50
The Rebels dominated for the majority of the contest but had to hold on late to take a one-point win over the Colts on Friday in the tournament semifinals.
Carroll led 19-13 at the end of the first period and outscored Lee 13-8 in the second to lead 32-21 at the half. Lee took the third period 11-9 and trailed 41-30 going to the fourth where the Colts outscored the Rebels 20-10.
Austin Smith led Carroll with 14 points and seven rebounds while Noah Beck had 13 points. Reese Fulton had another double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Carroll boys 54, Marshall Academy 49
The Rebels put four players in double-figure scoring and took a five-point win over the Patriots on Tuesday.
Marshall led 9-8 at the end of the first period but Carroll outscored the Patriots 13-7 in the second to lead 21-16 at the half. Carroll extended its lead in the third period, outscoring Marshall 11-8 to lead 32-24 going to the fourth. Marshall outscored Carroll 25-22 in the fourth but the Rebels held on for the win.
Reese Fulton led Carroll with 19 points and 13 rebounds while Austin Smith had 12 points and 11 rebounds. Noah Beck had 11 points while Logan Taylor had 10 points.
Kirk Academy girls 33, Canton 29
The Lady Rebels’ season came to an end as the Lady Raiders took a four-point win to open the Class AAA North State Tournament last week.
Kirk led 9-4 at the end of the first period and 18-11 at the half. Carroll outscored Kirk 12-8 in the third to cut the lead to 26-23 going to the fourth. But Kirk outscored Carroll 7-6 in the fourth to hang on for the win.
Gracie Turner led Carroll with eight points and six rebounds while Lainey Claire Dunn had six points and two steals. Mary Jordan Milton had four points and five rebounds while Dru Chamblee had four points and two steals.
