Both Winona Christian basketball teams advanced to the Class AAA North State Tournament this week as No. 3 seeds.
The Lady Stars won two out of three games last week as they opened up the week with a hard-fought 23-17 win over Indianola to qualify for the tournament. After a 47-25 loss to host Carroll, the Lady Stars beat Oak Hill 46-32 on Saturday to finish as the No. 3 seed.
The Stars split a pair of games as they lost in the semifinals to Carrol Academy 57-41 but bounced back in the consolation game and beat Indianola 65-35 on Saturday.
The Winona Christian girls are the No. 3 seed out of District 2-AAA and will take on Lee Academy on Thursday at 4 p.m. at Central Holmes in the North AAA Tournament.
The Winona Christian boys are also the No. 3 seed in the tournament and will also play Lee Academy on Thursday at 5:15 p.m.
WCS girls 23, Indianola 17
The Lady Stars pulled away in the fourth period in a low-scoring affair to open the district tournament on Tuesday in a qualifying game.
Indianola led 8-7 at the end of the first but the game was tied at 9-9 at the half. Winona outscored Indianola 3-2 in the third and 11-6 in the fourth to take the win.
Bella Roberts led Winona with 13 points while Sara Beth Burden had five points.
WCS girls 46, Oak Hill 32
The Lady Stars outscored the Lady Raiders in three of the four periods and took a 14-point win over the Lady Raiders in the consolation game on Saturday.
Winona led 12-7 at the end of the first and outscored Oak Hill 17-10 in the second to lead 29-17 at the half. After each team scored nine in the third, Winona Christian took the fourth period 8-6 to take the win.
Bella Roberts led Winona with 19 points while Olivia Brooks and Audrey Eldridge had 12 points apiece.
Central Holmes girls 47, WCS 25
The Lady Trojans pulled away and took a 22-point win over the Lady Stars on Thursday.
Each team scored nine points in the first period before Central Holmes took the second period 14-8 to lead 23-17 at the half. The Lady Trojans pulled away in the second period as they outscored Winona 10-3 in the third and 13-5 in the fourth.
Bella Roberts led Winona with 13 points while Sara Beth Burden added seven points.
WCS boys 65, Indianola 35
The Stars outscored the Colonels in every period and finished strong to take a 30-point win in the consolation game on Saturday.
Winona led 13-7 at the end of the first period and outscored Indianola 18-14 in the second to lead 31-21 at the half. After outscoring Indianola 14-12 in the third, the Stars finished by outscoring the Colonels 20-2 in the fourth for the final margin.
Choyce Diffey led Winona with 22 points while Reed Roberts had 18 points. Latham Hill also had nine points.
