The J.Z. George boys went 1-2 at its own tournament this past week in North Carrollton, while the Lady Jaguars dropped all three of their games.
Kosciusko High School won the tournament for both the girls and boys.
J.Z. George played Winona High School Saturday to close out the tournament. The boys contest was a tight one as the Tigers claimed a 77-70 win.
Winona jumped out to a 25-14 lead after the first period and stretched its advantage to 12 at 42-30 by halftime. However, the Jaguars got hot in the third period and outscored Winona 30-20 to pull within two at 62-60 headed to the fourth. The Tigers held a 15-10 edge in the final eight minutes.
Devante Smith led the Jaguars (1-3) with 14 points. Chris Rias had 12 points, and Malik Branch and Ceasa Glenn had 11 points each.
The Lady Jaguars were no match for Winona as it cruised to a 51-22 win. The Lady Tigers led 8-4 after one, 22-13 at the half and 37-19 after the third period.
Ta'Shanda Fleming led J.Z. George (1-4) with 10 points.
In games from last Thursday at the tournament, Kosciusko took a pair from the host school. The Lady Whippets won 54-33 as they led 10-7 after one, 29-15 at the half and 42-24 after the third period.
Fleming paced the Lady Jags with 13 points. Jasmine Newman tacked on eight points, and Anshanti Lee finished with six.
In the boys game, the Whippets claimed a 79-49 victory as they outscored the Jaguars 30-15 in the second half. Kosciusko led 22-16 after one and 49-34 at the half.
Smith paced J.Z. George with 23 points. Branch tacked on eight points.
In games from last Wednesday, freshman Jordun Normal scored the final five points as he had a three-pointer and made two free throws to give J.Z. George a 79-76 win over Ethel High School.
The Jaguars led 13-12 after the first, 33-27 at the half and 51-46 after the third period.
Branch led J.Z. George with 16 points. Glenn tacked on 15, and Normal finished with 14 points. Smith had 11 points, and Keldrick Glover had seven points.
The Lady Jags dropped a 60-41 decision to Ethel, which held leads of 22-14 after the first period, 35-28 at the half and 44-38 after the third frame.
Demetria Walls led J.Z. George with 11 points. Lee had 10 points, and Fleming tacked on eight.
J.Z. George is back in action Tuesday as it entertains French Camp Academy.
