The J.Z. George Basketball Tournament got under way Wednesday as it was moved up a day because of the football playoffs Friday night.
The other three teams in the tournament are Ethel, Kosciusko and Winona.
Wednesday, J.Z. George played Ethel in the two late games. Winona and Kosciusko squared off in the first two games of the day.
On tap for today (Thursday), the Lady Jags and Jaguars play Kosciusko at 7 and 8:30 p.m. Ethel and Winona tangle at 4 and 5:30 this afternoon.
Saturday's schedule has Ethel and Kosciusko playing at 4 and 5:30 p.m., while J.Z. George and Winona meet at 7 and 8:30 p.m.
The Lady Jaguars are off to a 1-1 start. They claimed a 23-6 win over Coldwater High School at the Grenada Classic on Nov. 3. The game had to be called midway through the second quarter when girls from both teams began fighting on the court.
Athletic Director Alex Rawls said three players from J.Z. George were suspended for two games each for their involvement in the incident.
The Lady Jags returned to the court on Nov. 6 and faced Union High School at Philadelphia High School. They dropped a 58-36 decision to Union as Tysehsia Grant scored a team-high 11 points for J.Z. George.
The Lady Jaguars trailed 18-12 after the first frame, 38-18 at the half and 49-32 after the third period.
Dekeria Walls tacked on nine points, and Tashandra Fleming had eight points for the Lady Jags.
The Jaguars are just 0-1 on the young season as they lost 86-73 to West Tallahatchie at the Grenada Classic.
The Choctaws held a slim 17-16 lead after the first period, but the Jaguars outscored West Tally 27-24 in the second period for a 43-41 advantage at the break. West Tally held a 61-49 lead after the third period.
Malik Branch paced J.Z. George with 18 points. Caesa Glenn tacked on 16, and Keldrick Glover and Devante Smith had nine points apiece.
