The Winona girls basketball rebounded from a 67-35 loss to Calhoun City with a 41-35 victory over Charleston before losing to Forest 58-30.
“We started off slow. We had a bad first quarter,” Coach Frank Miller said of the Charleston game.
The Lady Tigers trailed by a point at the half, but took the lead for good by outscoring Charleston 17-9 during the third quarter. Charleston pulled within a point in the fourth quarter before Winona pulled away for the win.
Tommesha Brown led the Lady Tigers with 16 points. Tyra Weathersby had 8 points and 11 rebounds, Tatyana Womack scored 8 points and MyCala Helms had 10 rebounds The Calhoun City game was never close. “It was pretty much over right after it started,” Miller said.
Brown was the team’s leading scorer with 8 points.
Brown and Womack both had 8 points against Forest. “They were really good and we were really not good,” Miller said.
Tigers
Calhoun City, Charleston and Forest pulled away in the second half against Winona. The Tigers were defeated by Calhoun City 91-47, Charleston 61-41 and Forest 56-38.
The Tigers trailed Calhoun City by nine in the third quarter. “We had two turnovers in a row and Calhoun City pulled away,” said Coach Presley Coleman.
The Charleston game was close until the fourth quarter. “Then the same thing happened,” Coleman said. “We just struggled to score. We had some good looks, but couldn’t finish.”
An’darius Coffey had 13 points and Jalen Daniels 12 against Calhoun City. Sean Merritt had 14 rebounds and 7 points.
Daniels was the team’s leading scorer against Charleston with 11 points. Merritt had 9 rebounds and 6 points.
The Tigers led Forest 17-16 in the second quarter. “But we didn’t finish the first half well and in the third quarter, Forest went on an 8-0 run,” Coleman said. “After that we were trying to play catchup.”
Coffey was 7 of 12 from the floor and scored 17 points. Davandre Bays led the team in rebounding with eight and scored 6 points.
The boys and girls have games with Germantown at Ridgeland High School Friday.
