The Winona boys soccer team began region play with a 4-2 victory over Mississippi School for Match and Science.
The Tigers led 2-0 at the half on goals by Cameron Bullard and Cade Eldridge and added second half goals by Bullard and Noah Durham.
“We passed the ball really well,” said coach Mark Austin. “We subbed in a lot of players to keep them fresh.”
He had praise for midfielder Nick Murphy, who had an assist. “He’s like the quarterback of the team. He puts people where they need to be.”
The Tigers are 1-2-1, but 1-0 in Region 4 for 3A/2A/1A schools.
The girls team was defeated by MSMS 5-0, but coach Michael Cox said “We played better as a team. We’re getting better. It’s just a slow process.”
The Tigers and Lady Tigers played Philadelphia Tuesday and have home games with New Hope Saturday, beginning with the girls at 11 a.m.
