The Winona slow-pitch softball team came out swinging against Bruce, rolling to a 16-9 win.
“We hit the ball really well. We had 19 hits,” said coach Steven Helms.
Tommesha Brown and McCayla Helms each had two doubles and a triple, Madison Mills two triples and a single and Allyn-Claire Gant two doubles and a single.
It was the team’s best offensive performance of the season. Helms said the players put in extra hitting drills in practice. “We took away some rules and made it easier for them.”
Players were told to stand in the back of the batter’s box to get a better look at pitches.
Winona also had a win over Starkville 7-1 to even the record at 2-2. Brown and Helms led a 10-hit attack, each with a single and a triple.
“We didn’t hit the ball as well against Starkville, but our defense played a lot better,” Helms said. Brown, Helms, Gant and Emilee Lowery combined to turn our double plays.
He noted that the Lady Tigers reached double figures in hit two straight games. “Maybe we’re figuring some stuff out.”
A game at Leake Central scheduled for last Saturday was rained out. No decision has been made on whether it will be rescheduled. The Lady Tigers played East Webster Tuesday, have a home game Thursday with Cleveland Central and will be at Riverside Saturday.
