The Winona slow-pitch softball team is assured of making the playoffs as the result of a 12-1 victory over Shannon that improved the Class II, Region 2 record to 2-1. The Lady Tigers will finish no worse than fourth in the five-team region.
MyCala Helms, the daughter of Coach Steven Helms, led a 16-hit attack against Shannon with four hits. Tommesha Brown had three hits, Tyra Weathersby, Abria Weathersby and Allyn-Claire Gant two hits each.
The Lady Tigers suffered two losses last week, falling to French Camp 16-8 and Ethel 10-0.
Winona surrendered 14 walks to French Camp. “You can’t do that in slow pitch and be successful,” said coach Helms.
Emilee Lowery had three hits for the Lady Tigers and Helms had two.
Coach Helms said Winona played well on defense against Ethel, but managed only two hits, by Gant and Katy Ware.
The Lady Tigers played Mooreville Monday and North Pontotoc Tuesday. Winona will be at home Thursday against South Pontotoc to complete an earlier game suspended by rain and then will play a full game. The Lady Tigers also have a game at East Webster Saturday.
Mooreville, North Pontotoc and South Pontotoc are region games. The playoffs are scheduled to begin Oct. 6 with Winona playing a team from Region 3.
