Carson Holly led the Winona boys to a sixth place finish at the Warrior Classic cross country meet at Senatobia last Saturday. Holly finished seventh out of 78 runners with a time of 21:08 for the five kilometer (3.1 mile) race.
“I was pleased with the overall effort,” said Coach Chris McRae. “It was an extremely hard course. It was very hilly. It wasn’t that hot, but it was extremely muggy that morning. I was pleased with how we battled those elements.”
Winona had a team score of 158. Senatobia won the race with a score of 29. Eric Fritz of Southaven was the individual winner in 19:28.
Other Winona runners were Sam Matriasciano, 38th in 24:40; Noah Durham, 45th in 25:18; Jarabelle Davis, 56th in 27:30; and D’Marco Campbell, 60th in 28:21.
Kaylee Rice was the only Winona girl in the race. She finished 20th with a time of 29:51. Anna Clark was the winner in 21:53, leading Senatobia to the team title.
Amya Phillips, the only other girl on the Winona varsity, was unable to run due to illness.
McRae feels that running on a tough course in tough weather conditions will help prepare the runners for future meets. “I think out times will be better when it’s cooler and we get on flatter courses.”
The next meet for Winona is Saturday at Canton.
