J.Z. George began a stretch of six straight Region 3-3A games Tuesday as it played host to Ruleville Central High School.
The Lady Jags and Jaguars both need to get hot to improve their positioning for the upcoming district tournament. The girls were 0-4 in league play before Tuesday's home tilt, while the boys were 1-3 in district.
J.Z. George hits the road Friday to take on Yazoo County High School. The Panthers are the top-ranked team in the 3A boys ranks.
In action from last week, J.Z. George played at East Webster Friday night. The Lady Jags were defeated 46-14 as they were held to six points in the final three quarters.
East Webster held a slim 9-8 lead after the first frame, then exploded for a 16-4 run in the second period to lead 25-12 at the half. The Lady Wolves outscored J.Z. George 15-2 in the third quarter.
Dekeria Walls led the Lady Jags (2-18 overall) with five points. Natajah Basin chipped in three points.
The Jaguars got off to a slow start which enabled East Webster to post a 77-63 win to drop J.Z. George to 6-13 overall. The Wolverines led 22-10 after the first frame and 40-22 at the half. A 26-18 run by the Jaguars in the third period pulled them to within 10 at 58-48 headed to the fourth quarter.
Malik Branch led the Jaguars with 20 points. Caesa Glenn tallied nine.
J.Z. George played host to Yazoo County on Jan. 15. The Lady Jags dropped a 70-50 decision as Yazoo County led 16-9 after one, 34-21 at the half and 54-31 after the third period.
Tashanda Fleming led J.Z. George with 19 points, and Basin chipped in seven.
In the boys game, the Panthers blew open a fairly tight game at the half by outscoring the Jaguars 48-17 in the second half to record a 98-53 win. Yazoo County led 50-36 at the break and outscored the Jags 22-7 in the third and 26-10 in the fourth.
Branch had a team-high 24 points for J.Z. George, and Devante Smith tacked on 12. Glenn had nine points.
