Winona Christian senior Shelby Bowering is a second generation cheerleader whose cheering has resulted in a scholarship to Hinds Community College.
“I didn't expect to get a full scholarship, but I'm very blessed to have received one,” she said. Looking down the road, she said “I hope to cheer at Mississippi State like my mother did.”
Bowering was a cheerleader at Winona High School before transferring to Winona Christian as a junior, where she was not a cheerleader her first year.
She joined the squad as a senior because some of her friends were doing it.
“She came with outstanding talent,” said Winona Christian cheer coach Jolynn White. “She has always been an outstanding tumbler. This year, she grew tremendously.”
She was the team's “flyer,” which means she was at the top of the stunts. There were some mishaps early in the year, but Bowerling has never been injured.
“This year, we had a rough start because most of the people on the team had never cheered before,” she said.
Bowering plans to study athletic training.
She is the fourth Winona cheerleader in five years to earn a scholarship. Kayla Dowdy in 2015, Georgia Watkins in 2017 and Johna Beavers last year received scholarships to Holmes Community College.
