Winona senior Krystle Hughes had a day to remember at the Division 3-3A track meet with four first place finishes, including two “Elite Performances.”
She won the 100 with a time of 12.18, the 200 (25.59), 400 (1:06) and the long jump (17-7).
At 10 points for a first place, she totaled 40 points, the maximum that an athlete can score with a limit of four events.
“You can't do better than that,” said Winona coach Chris McRae.
Hughes' time in the 100 is the sixth fastest in the state this year according to the website MileSplit MS, trailing five girls from 6A schools. She also has the sixth fastest 200 time, 25.49 at the Madison Central Track Classic last month.
Winona had three other first place finishes in the girls meet and six in the boys meet. Both teams finished second, trailing Charleston in the boys meet and Yazoo County in the girls competition.
The other top girls finishes were by eighth grader Jayla Campbell in the 100 hurdles (18.29), junior Tyra Weathersby in the triple jump (35-½) and sophomore Aasjahla Garron in the pole vault. She cleared the bar at eighth feet.
Boys winners were senior Ahmad Robinson in the 100 (10.93), junior Carson Holly in the 1600 (4:57), junior Andarious Coffey in the long jump (21 feet), sophomore Isaac Leech in the pole vault (12-6) and senior Jalyn Phillips in the shot put (40-8) and the discus (128-6).
Robinson suffered a leg injury, possibly a hamstring, while running in the 800 relay. “He came back later in the meet to run the 200 and he qualified. I don't know how he did it,” McRae said.
The top four in each event qualified for the Region 2-3A meet that Winona will host Friday.
Boys who qualified in addition to the first place finishers were Robinson with a fourth in the 200, senior Cameron Bullard second in the pole vault and third in the 800, Holly fourth in the 800, Coffey second in the triple jump, sophomore Jaylyn Sanders third in the long jump and eighth grader Noah Durham third in the pole vault. The boys 400, 1600 and 3200 relay teams qualified with third place finishes.
Other girls who qualified are Weathersby second in the long jump and fourth in the 200, seventh grader Murry Catherine Alderman third in the 1600, eighth grader Jada Sanders fourth in the 100 and Garron third in the triple jump. The 400 and 3200 relay teams finished third and the 800 team was fourth.
