It was a simple decision for Alex Rawls.
Rawls, who has served as the athletic director, assistant football coach and assistant principal at J.Z. George High School the last 2 1/2 years, resigned from his positions in North Carrollton to join the staff at Eupora High School.
Rawls and his family live in Eupora.
"It's 47 miles from my house to J.Z. George, and it takes me an hour to get there. I've been doing that for 2 1/2 years. I was approached about an opening at Eupora, and I informed Mr. (Billy Joe) Ferguson (school superintendent) and Mrs. (Corretta) Green (principal at J.Z. George) that it was my intention to move on from J.Z. George for personal reasons.
"I'm now just two minutes away from where my daughter attends school. I can be at work in five minutes, and I get to see my family a lot more now. That was my No. 1 reason for making this decision."
Rawls, who served as the head baseball coach in his first stint at J.Z. George for four years, will teach a seventh-grade science class, be in physical education, and serve as an assistant coach for girls fast-pitch and slow-pitch softball.
"I talked to all the head coaches (at J.Z. George) of each program and told them they are basically their own ADs until something is decided about the direction J.Z. George is going to go. I feel like I've left the athletic programs in good shape. We sat out to change the culture of the programs at J.Z. George, and I believe that is the direction we have them headed in
