The Winona High School baseball team concluded its season last week with a first-round playoff loss to Alcorn Central High School in the MHSAA State 3A playoffs.
Alcorn Central eliminated the Tigers with a 15-0 win last Tuesday in Game 3 of the best-of-three series. The Bears held Winona to no hits, taking advantage of four defensive errors and eight walks issued by Tiger pitching.
Alcorn Central tallied three runs each in the first and third frames, four in the second and five in the fifth.
Wyatt Boone (4-1) took the loss on the mound as he went 1 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs (three earned) on five hits, walking one. Hammond Austin went 1 1/3 innings, yielding three runs (all earned) on two hits, walking two and striking out one. Tommarion Brown went 2 1/3 innings, giving up five runs (two earned) on three hits, walking five and fanning three.
Winona, which lost the first game 8-1, forced the third game with an 11-8 victory in Game 2 last Monday. The Tigers, who end their season at 15-11, scored eight runs in the third frame, one in the fourth and two in the fifth. Alcorn tallied three runs in the first, two in the third and one run each in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
Winona outhit the Bears 12-9. Chase Richardson had three singles, two RBIs and scored a run, and Austin, Kam’ron Robinson and Brown had two singles each. Austin also drove in two runs and scored once, and Robinson and Brown had an RBI and scored a run apiece.
Danarius Robinson had a double and scored twice, and Miles Bailey and Conner Helms had a single, RBI and scored a run each. Jordan Richardson had an RBI and scored a run.
