A Winona man is facing three felony charges in connection with a shooting which occurred on October 25.
Christopher Olton, 42, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, shooting into a dwelling and possession of a weapon by a felon.
According to the testimony of Officer Scottie Montgomery, officers were dispatched to Oakwood Apartments for reports of shots being fired.
He said he, along with two Montgomery County sheriff deputies, responded to the call. Montgomery said when they arrived on the scene, a man, he identified on the stand as Olton, was on the stairs at the apartment building, holding Caresia Hopkins by her hair and a gun to her head.
Montgomery said he and Deputy Jacob Edwards ordered Olton to put the gun down, and he complied. He said the gun, a .38 caliber handgun, was recovered at the scene.
“It was chaotic out there. We had people coming up to us telling us that he pointed the gun at them also,” Montgomery testified.
When asked how the two knew each other, Montgomery said Olton was in a relationship Hopkins’ sister. He said an altercation took place that started in the upstairs apartment and ended up in the downstairs apartment.
Montgomery testified that there was a bullet hole in the floor of the upstairs apartment, as if someone was shooting downward, and a bullet hole going through the door of the second apartment. Montgomery said there was also a round that was jammed in the gun.
“He told us that he was there to get his keys, that’s all he said,” Montgomery said.
“Did he get his keys?” City Prosecutor Putt Crull, Jr. asked.
“No, he didn’t,” Montgomery said.
Judge Alan D. Lancaster found that there was sufficient evidence to bound Olton over to the action of the Montgomery County Grand Jury. He set Olton’s bond at $300,000, $100,000 for each count.
In another case, Corey Gilmore was bound over to the action of the grand jury after he waived his right to a preliminary hearing. Gilmore’s bond was set at $50,000. Gilmore was charged with several counts of burglary, burglary of a dwelling, and possession of a controlled substance.
Also, Terry Baskin, 58, was bound over to the action of the grand jury. Office Matt Miletello testified that officers were dispatched to reports of an unknown man in the van of Winona Dry Cleaners opening and closing the door.
He said when they arrived on scene, Baskin was still inside the van opening and closing the door. He testified that it appeared the glove compartment had been ransacked, like someone was looking for something, and the vehicle information was on the ground but nothing was taken.
Miletello said defendant resisted arrest, and he had to stun him in order to secure him in handcuffs.
He said there was no physical damage to the van.
