The Town of Vaiden has received a $450,000 Community Development Block Grant for their sewage project.
Mayor Mel Hawthorne told the Board of Aldermen Monday night that the town was awarded the grant. He said the town has to put chlorine in its wastewater before it goes into the Big Black River. Hawthorne said before they do that, they have to perform maintenance on their pumps as well.
The board approved Chris Pope with North Central Planning and Development as the grant’s environmental officer.
Also, the board discussed the HOME grant the town of Vaiden was awarded. The town received $550,000 to renovate or rebuild homes for residents who qualify.
Board attorney Lane Greenlee advised Hawthorne and the board to let residents know what they need to qualify ahead of time. He said sometimes residents will still apply, knowing there’s a lien against the home or the deed isn’t clear and it slows down progress.
He said residents must be within the city limits of Vaiden, they cannot be in the county with a Vaiden address. They must own the home they are qualifying and have a clear title to the home. It cannot be heir property or rental property, unless the homeowner of the rental home is applying.
Greenlee said letting people know ahead of time before they apply makes things go a little smoother.
