The Town of Kilmichael is narrowing down its search for a new deputy city clerk to help current clerk Pauline Hall.
The position was left vacant after former assistant clerk Claudette McClain resigned in May. Hall said the position was advertised twice after the board approved it in a May 14 special call meeting.
Hall said the deadline closed for applications on July 2.
Mayor Bobby Howell told the board of aldermen during its Monday night meeting that the town had received 23 applications and he and Hall narrowed the candidates down to nine.
“We’re going to put our heads together and come up with a recommendation for the board for its next meeting,” he said.
Ward 2 Alderman Bernard Jenkins wanted to know if Howell and Hall could bring more than one candidate.
“I don’t want y’all to bring one and then we’re back in the same predicament we’re in now, and it’s September and we’re having to approve someone,” he said.
Howell told him the search won’t take that long, and he and Hall hope that by narrowing the field down, they’ll be able to pick the best candidate.
Also, the board amended its 2017-2018 fiscal year budget by $43,000. Board members wondered with the loss of Montgomery County Elementary and Montgomery County High School and with the recent tornado that displaced some of Kilmichael’s residents, if the town will see a decrease in ad valorem funding back from the county.
Howell said right now the town should be okay, but he won’t know until the numbers come back from the county.
