Residents in Kilmichael will see a 50 cent increase in their garbage bills. The increase will take current bills from $13 to $13.50.
During their Tuesday night board meeting, Mayor Bobby Howell said the increase is because Waste Management increased the town’s rate.
“We have to recoup somehow, and the increase is the only way,” he said.
“They went up on us so we have to go up on us,” Alderman Brian Lott said.
Also, the board discussed road work for proposed street overlay and milling. During the state legislative special session, the town of Kilmichael was awarded $200,000 to resurface Binford Street. Howell said projects are first come, first serve, and the town turned in their documentation back to the Department of Finance quickly.
“So, we should be seeing that money soon,” he said. Howell said the money has to have its own separate line item. He said because asphalt companies have closed for the year, the project won’t take place until the spring.
The board also:
• Heard from Josh Hadet, the new executive director of the Mid-Mississippi Regional Library System who took over after Richard Green retired. Hadet praised Kilmichael librarian Kerrie Varnes on the work she’s done.
“You can tell when a person has a passion for what they do and Kerrie has that passion,” he said.
