While many are at home because of the Coronavirus pandemic, it’s the best time to complete the United States Census.
The Census is open for many to complete now and is only a few short questions. The State of Mississippi, Carroll County, and municipalities all rely on the funding that comes from completing the Census.
“Doing a credible job of the Census could help the state’s clout in Congress. Mississippi lost a seat in the U.S. House after the 2000 Census when we went from five congressmen to four.” North Carrollton Mayor Ken Strachan said.
Strachan said completing the Census is what helps determine how much funding Mississippi receives.
“The federal Census also determines how much Mississippi’s share of over half a trillion dollars will be after the counting is completed. In FY 2016, the state drew down $10.1 billion. The more Mississippians not counted, the less federal funds our state receives for infrastructure, including; roads and bridges; also public healthcare such as Medicaid and Medicare, public housing, Head Start, Pell Grants, and a host of other federal spending programs that are population-driven,” Strachan said.
