The town of Kilmichael is in the process of finalizing its 2018-2019 fiscal year budget.
Tuesday night, the board of aldermen held its budget meeting for their upcoming fiscal year, which will go into effect on Oct. 1.
Currently, the town’s budget is $340,026, and the proposed budget, totaling $381,330, shows an increase in revenue of $41,304. However, Kilmichael’s millage rate is currently at 58.5 and will stay the same for the upcoming year.
The biggest topic of the night was whether or not to give the library workers a four percent pay increase in the town’s annual contribution to the library’s operational budget. Mayor Bobby Howell said the town received a letter from the Mid-Mississippi Regional Library System requesting the increase.
“It’s something that they send out every year,” Howell said.
Last year, the board did a swap and repaired the library’s air conditioning.
Alderman Earnest Curtis said if the town has good employees, then they should pay the four percent to keep them.
“It’s hard to find people that will work, I deal with them every day,” he said.
John Pearson, Jr. also informed the board that they would have to purchase new tables for the library. “They need five new tables. They don’t just use them for the library, people hold events there also.”
Curtis asked about the tables at the school.
“They’re in Winona,” City Clerk Pauline Hall said. “They came and got all of those tables.”
In other business, the board approved to amend budget to pay lease fee in the amount of $5,000 that the town of Kilmichael owed to the Winona-Montgomery School District out of its current fiscal budget.
