The Carroll County School Board met via teleconference on Thursday, Dec. 10, at the central office.
The Board of Trustees voted to update the J.Z. George High School Gymnasium floor. Superintendent Jim Ray said the gym floor is sanded down and re-varnished by Roberson’s out of Indianola each year.
He said that, after looking at the floor, he suggested adding a Jaguar head and paw prints, as well as updating the letters and lines. Ray said Roberson’s quoted a price of $6,600, including the original re-varnishing and sanding.
“We’re hosting the district tournament this year, and we want it to look nice,” Ray said. He said the added touches will make the gym floor look really nice. Business Manager Brett Reynolds said the funding would come from the athletic department.
During his Superintendent’s report, Ray told board members that the J.Z. George Jaguars were honored by the towns of North Carrollton and Carrollton. Ray said North Carrollton Mayor Ken Strachan called him a few weeks ago and said the towns would make a resolution honoring the Jags on their advancement to the second round of the playoffs.
“We were tickled to death that they were honoring us,” Ray said. “We were just a two-point conversion away from going to the third round.”
He said the Jaguars had a good season and played with a lot of heart.
“It’s the small wins that make a big impact on programs,” Ray said.
He also updated the board on the school accreditation process. Ray said the district is close to checking off two very big standards on their audit.
