As students prepare for their first nine weeks tests, the Carroll County School District is still experiencing problems with its internet service.
In November, Assistant Superintendent Dr. Wendy Hubbard told the board that over time viruses had invaded the district’s system, eventually shutting down the Ethernet and taking the district offline.
Hubbard said Thursday during the board’s meeting in Vaiden that the district is slowly getting back online, but they are not 100 percent there yet.
“Because of our computer problems, our children were not able to take their STAR tests. The high school is preparing to take its Benchmark tests, and we’re not sure if that’s going to be able to happen or to retest to the high school for graduation [those who didn’t pass their test earlier this Spring.]”
Hubbard said she also spoke with the Mississippi Department of Education and said there are aware of the problems that Carroll County are having, and it has postponed its deadline for corrections on its audit, originally set for December 31, to January 19.
Also, the board approved having a designee that will stand in for Principal Khalilah Tate if she has to be out. According to the audit performed by the Mississippi Department of Education, former Principal Fletcher Harges (who was principal at the time of the audit) or Principal Coretta Green have had stand-ins if they were out of the office for any reason.
To rectify this, the board hired Nathan Moncrief as Assistant Principal at J.Z. George High School, but it only rectified part of the problem. Tate still didn’t have a designee if she had to be out. The board approved a designee, which has to be a certified teacher, in the event she has to be away from school.

Approved for a bus to be sold for scrap and approved a $320.15 bid for a surplus bus.
Approved donations from Toyota, Board Member John Phillips in the amount of $2,550 for Marshall Elementary, the North Carrollton Baptist Church Sunday School Class. The Class wants to furnish coats, scarves, hats, gloves to students at Marshall.
