Friday, two of Carroll and Montgomery counties young people will judge the annual Winona Scarecrow Contest, sponsored by Modern Woodmen of the World.
Dean Ferguson, 6, and Lillie Claire Bennett, 4, -- with the help of a chauffeur – will go around Winona judging which scarecrow they like best in three catergories: residential, business and organization. The winners will have their picture in the paper with Matt Bennett and the first place winner will receive a trophy. Second and third place winners will also be announced.
The scarecrow contest kicks off the area’s Halloween events. There are several trunk-or-treats planned. On Sunday, Oct. 27, Moore Memorial United Methodist Church will have its annual trunk-or-treat. Children are encouraged to wear their costumes, collect treats and most importantly, have fun while doing it.
The church will also provide a kid-friendly meal to those who attend.
On Thursday, Oct. 31, Winona Main Street is the presenting sponsor the annual Fall Festival and Trunk-or-Treat from 5:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. in downtown Winona. The trunk-or-treat will begin at 7 p.m.
Booth spaces for the festival are free and all items at the booth must be free. Nothing can be for sale. All food, activites and games must be free.
Trunks will be lined up along the south end of Front Street, and the carinval will be on the north end.

Also, the Towns of Carrollton and North Carrollton will celebrate Halloween on Thursday, October 31. There will be also be Trunk-or-Treats held at the Carrollton Methodist Church and at the Carrollton Baptist Church. North Carrollton Baptist Church will participate with Carrollton for trunk-or-treat. The Town of North Carrollton will also join Carrollton for the activities on Halloween.
The Town of Vaiden will host a trunk-or-treat from 5:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. The event will take place on Lee Street. To reserve your spot, please call Vaiden City Hall at 464-5266.
The Town of Kilmichael will have a trunk-or-treat from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. on the Kilmichael Square Halloween night, and it is hosted by the Friends of Kilmichael Library. Admission is free and everyone is invited. Set up is also free.
The Friends of Kilmichael Library will have a concession stand available, selling hot dogs, chili, chips and drinks. The proceeds will go to help fund upcoming library events.
