Winona Christian School’s Blake Marlow recently signed to continue his baseball career at Copiah-Lincoln Community College in Wesson.
Winona Christian baseball coach Shannon Self said Marlow signed as a pitcher for the Wolves.
“He signed as a pitcher but I think he can have a future as a catcher,” Self said. “His fastball is going to be in the mid 80s and he has a really good breaking pitch. When he is on, he’s hard to beat and as good as anybody.”
Self said Marlow has been pitching for the Stars since the ninth grade and was a key contributor to the Stars’ 2017 state championship team. This year, he is one of the team’s two district starters on the mound, when he isn’t playing catcher.
“I have him and Latham Hill as district starters,” Self said. “He could be No. 1 or 2, but he is one of our district starters. He’s a really good hitter and I think that’s why he has a chance to play catcher in college.”
Self said he thinks Marlow has the potential to increase his velocity.
“I think if he gets into his legs a little more, he can get a couple of more hours on his fastball,” Self said. “I think he will make a great reliever at that level because he can command two pitches on most days. Again, I still don’t know what his best position is. Because he’s focusing on catching, that might be his best position.”
Marlow was also a starter on the football team where he played free safety and fullback for the Stars.
“He is a competitor and playing multiple sports definitely helped him,” Self said. “He is an extremely competitive kid. He’s a good kid who has worked hard. He loves the game of baseball as much as anybody I have coached. He works hard at it.”
