On Tuesday, April 14, Gov. Tate Reeves announced that all schools were closed in the state for the remainder of the academic year, and many are left questioning how students will be promoted/retained, how learning will continue, and if graduation will be held.
Some schools are participating in distance learning and are conducting online classrooms. Still, for many in the state, many do not have adequate internet service to complete the tasks. The Carroll County School District, during this time, like many rural schools, are sending out learning packets to keep students learning while sheltering at home. However, the packets aren’t being graded.
In a statement, the district addressed many concerns parents may have: “Due to the Governor’s order, Carroll County School District’s schools will remain closed for the remainder of the 2019- 2020 school year. We will resume the Grab and Go feeding program on April 27. The program will be available on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday of each week through the remainder of the academic school year. Meals may be picked up in Blackhawk, at Vaiden Gym, or JZ George Gym in Carrollton.”
The statement continued: “Third nine weeks report cards and learning packets will be available on April 27 at these locations as well. Due to FERPA regulations, only students or their parents or legal guardians are allowed to pick up report cards. No other family members or friends are allowed to pick these up. If you are unable to pick up your child’s report card and would like it emailed or mailed to you, please email sjohnson@ccsd.ms or send a message through School Status to your child’s homeroom teacher.
Plans for end of year report cards, promotion, and retention, and graduation ceremonies will come at a later date. Please be patient as we work through this storm. We know this is a difficult time for our staff, students, and parents, but the safety of our students is our first priority. We will miss our students greatly and look forward to seeing them all in the fall. Thank you for all you do for the children in Carroll County.”
Superintendent Jim Ray said other plans will be announced after the Carroll County School Board meets for their May board meeting.
